National (De)fence
2019-2021
Paintings
acrylic on canvas
A fence gives you the first impression of the house and its owner. It not only represents the owner’s aesthetic preferences and material status, but also shows the level of trust towards strangers. The ‘National (De)fence’ art project records the changes that have taken place in the shape of fences over the thirty years since the fall of communism in Poland. Paying attention to the fence, the ubiquitous and therefore almost transparent element of the Polish landscape, is thus an attempt to reflect on the condition of the common space and divisions within society.
